“…let me hear your voice; for your voice is sweet, and your face is lovely (Song of Solomon 2:14b

I sat on my back porch one morning, in my favorite rocker with my first cup of java in hand. The
sun was just beginning to rise over the Eastern horizon, but all the birds had already awakened.
Such a cacophony of sound! Each twitter, each chirp, each song made up a symphony of sound,
all at the same time. Although I couldn’t associate the individual sounds with the birds making
them, I could hear all the birds in chorus – twittering, chirping, and singing.
I wondered if this is how we sound to God. Some voices singing, some praying, some mourning,
even crying, some laughing, some yelling - all of us at the same time. Unlike me, God can and
does recognize each individual’s voice. He hears the praise and adoration of the woman
cleaning her home, while hearing the pleas of the man who desperately needs a job to support
his family. He hears the moans of the woman laboring to bring new life into this world, while
hearing the cries of a family whose elderly saint-of-a-mother has just left them to be with Him.
He hears the prayers of the five-year-old in chorus with the prayers of the ninety-five-year-old.
Whether you whisper or yell, He hears you.

He hears you when you pray, and tells us to “…pray continually, give thanks in all circumstances;
for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus (1 Thessalonians 5:17-18 NIV).”

Even when you simply speak His name, “Jesus, Abba Father,” He hears you – so talk with Him.
“Pray continually…”  Sing to Him. Tell Him when you’re tired, hurt, angry.  Tell Him when you’re
excited and inspired.  Tell Him when you’re in need and want. He hears your voice. And not only
does He hear you, He is enraptured by the sound of your voice – YOU, His highest creation, no
matter whether you have had a past relationship with Him or not - He wants to hear from you
now. No matter your circumstances past or present, no matter how you have suffered or sinned.
He loves YOU and wants to hear from you.
